The Magnus effect is the sideways deflection (curving) of a spinning body moving through a fluid, caused by a pressure difference between its two sides.

Consider a ball spinning while moving through air. Because of its spin, the surface of the ball drags a thin layer of air along with it. On one side of the ball this dragged air moves in the same direction as the airflow, so the air speed there is higher; on the other side the dragged air opposes the airflow, so the air speed there is lower.

By Bernoulli's principle, where the fluid moves faster the pressure is lower, and where it moves slower the pressure is higher. This creates a pressure difference across the ball, producing a net force perpendicular to the direction of motion. As a result the ball follows a curved path.
