A carburettor uses Bernoulli's principle — fast-moving air in a narrow throat has lower pressure, and this low pressure draws in fuel to mix with the air.

Bernoulli's principle

For a streamlined, non-viscous, incompressible fluid flow, Bernoulli's equation states:

p+12ρv2+ρgh=constantp + \frac{1}{2}\rho v^2 + \rho g h = \text{constant}

At the same height, this means where the fluid's speed vv is higher, its pressure pp must be lower, and vice versa.

Application in the carburettor

  1. Air drawn into the engine passes through a specially shaped tube inside the carburettor that narrows to a constricted throat (a venturi).
  2. By the equation of continuity (A1v1=A2v2A_1v_1 = A_2v_2), the narrower cross-section forces the air to speed up as it passes through the throat.
  3. By Bernoulli's principle, this increase in air speed at the throat causes a corresponding drop in air pressure at that point. …
