Warm air is less dense than cool air, so by convection it rises and collects near the ceiling; ventilators placed just below the roof let this rising hot, stale air escape efficiently, which is why they are positioned there rather than near the floor.

Why hot air rises. When air inside a room is heated (by people, appliances, sunlight, cooking, etc.), it expands and becomes less dense than the surrounding cooler air. Because of this lower density, the warm air experiences a net upward buoyant force and rises toward the ceiling — this is natural convection.

Role of the ventilator's position. As warm air continuously rises and accumulates near the roof, it needs an outlet; a ventilator placed just below the roof allows this hot, often stale/CO₂-rich air to escape directly to the outside. Fresh, cooler air from outside (or from lower openings/doors/windows) then flows in to replace it, setting up a continuous convection current that keeps the room ventilated and comfortable.
