The figure shows two modes of heat transfer at once: heat conducted along the solid metal rod held in the fire (A), and hot air rising from the flame to the hand held directly above it (B) — conduction and convection.

A — Conduction. The arrow A runs along the solid metal rod, from the end in the fire toward the hand holding it. In a solid, heat is handed on particle-to-particle: the atoms at the hot end vibrate more energetically and pass energy to their neighbours, so heat travels through the material of the rod itself without any bulk movement of matter. This is conduction — the reason the far end of a metal rod left in a fire eventually becomes too hot to hold.
