It is the 'hidden' heat absorbed during melting that changes the state of a substance but not its temperature.

When a solid is heated to its melting point, further heat supplied does not raise its temperature; instead it is used entirely to break the intermolecular bonds holding the solid structure together, converting it into a liquid at the same temperature. This heat is called the latent heat of fusion.

It is defined by: Q = mL, where Q is the heat supplied, m is the mass of the substance, and L is the latent heat of fusion (specific latent heat), with SI unit J/kg.
