A white/light-coloured surface reflects most incident radiation and absorbs very little, whereas a dark surface absorbs most of it — so white roofs stay cooler in summer.

By Kirchhoff's law of radiation, a good absorber of heat is also a good emitter, and conversely, a poor absorber (a good reflector) is a poor emitter. Dark/black surfaces absorb nearly all incident radiation (good absorbers), so they heat up quickly. White or light-coloured surfaces reflect most of the incident solar radiation and absorb only a small fraction, so they heat up much more slowly and stay at a lower equilibrium temperature.
