C.V. Raman discovered the Raman Effect — the scattering of light with a change in wavelength when it passes through a transparent medium.

Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (C.V. Raman) was a distinguished Indian physicist. While studying how light interacts with matter, he observed that when a beam of monochromatic (single-wavelength) light passes through a liquid, gas or transparent solid, most of the light is scattered without any change in wavelength (elastic / Rayleigh scattering), but a very small fraction is scattered with a changed wavelength.

This change in wavelength (and hence frequency) of the scattered light arises because the light exchanges energy with the vibrational and rotational energy levels of the molecules of the medium. The phenomenon is called the Raman Effect, and the lines of shifted wavelength in the scattered spectrum are called Raman lines. The effect gives valuable information about molecular structure.
