C.V. Raman discovered the Raman Effect - the change in wavelength of light when it is scattered by molecules of a medium.

Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was a distinguished Indian physicist. While studying the scattering of light by liquids, he observed that when a beam of monochromatic light passes through a transparent medium, most of the scattered light keeps the same frequency (Rayleigh scattering), but a small fraction of it emerges with a slightly changed frequency.
