Q.What is meant by cropping pattern?
Meaning: Cropping pattern denotes the proportionate area sown under various crops in a region at a point of time, and the way crops succeed one another on the same land through the agricultural year (kharif → rabi → zaid, where irrigation permits).
Determinants: It is shaped by (i) natural factors — soil type, rainfall and climate; (ii) economic factors — relative profitability/prices of crops, availability of irrigation, credit and inputs; and (iii) policy factors — minimum support prices and procurement, which encourage farmers to grow particular crops.
Significance: The cropping pattern of a region reveals how far its agriculture is diversified, how dependent it is on the monsoon, and how commercialised (cash-crop oriented) versus subsistence-oriented it is.
Cropping pattern is the proportion of cultivated area allotted to different crops/seasons in a region, determined jointly by natural conditions and economic incentives.
