Regional imbalances in India arise from unequal natural resources, geographical differences, the colonial legacy, concentration of industry and investment in advanced regions, uneven infrastructure, differences in human capital, and political factors — so some states developed rapidly while others remained backward.

Regional imbalance refers to the wide and persistent differences in the level of economic development, income and living standards among the various regions and states of a country. In a large and diverse country like India these imbalances are marked, and the AP Intermediate 2nd-year Economics course (aligned with the NCERT/CBSE commerce curriculum) explains their causes.

Reasons for regional imbalances in India:

  1. Uneven natural resources. Some regions are rich in minerals, water and fertile land while others are poorly endowed, affecting their development.

  2. Geographical and climatic factors. Hilly, arid or flood-prone areas find development costlier and slower than well-connected plains.

  3. Historical and colonial factors. During colonial rule, ports and a few commercial centres were developed while the interior was neglected, creating long-lasting gaps.

  4. Concentration of industry and investment. New industries and private investment tend to go to already-developed regions that have markets and facilities, widening the gap.

  5. Differences in infrastructure. Backward regions lack adequate power, transport, irrigation, banking and communication, which discourages investment.

  6. Differences in human capital. Regions with better education, skills and health attract more economic activity than those lacking them.
