Developed regions attract still more investment while backward regions stay behind, so the gap widens. This is a standard AP Intermediate 2nd-year Economics topic on balanced development.
Regional imbalance (or regional disparity) refers to the wide differences in the level of economic development between the various states and regions of India — some are industrially advanced with high incomes, while others remain agricultural and poor. The main causes are:
- Uneven distribution of natural resources. Regions rich in minerals, fertile soil and water developed industry and agriculture faster, while resource-poor regions lagged.
- Historical and colonial factors. During British rule, port cities and some areas were developed for trade while the interior was neglected, leaving a legacy of imbalance.
- Differences in infrastructure. Regions with better power, transport, irrigation, banking and communication attracted industry, whereas areas lacking these facilities could not develop.
- Concentration of investment. Both private investors and, to an extent, public investment preferred already-developed regions with ready infrastructure and markets, deepening the gap.
- Locational advantages. Proximity to ports, raw materials, markets and cities gave some regions a natural head start.
- Unequal spread of education and skills. Regions with better educational facilities produced skilled labour and entrepreneurs, aiding development.
- Agricultural differences. The benefits of the Green Revolution were concentrated in a few well-irrigated regions, widening agricultural disparities. …
