The HDI is a UNDP composite index of human development based on three dimensions — health (life expectancy), education (schooling) and standard of living (per capita income) — with a value between 0 and 1; a higher value means higher human development.

The Human Development Index was introduced by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1990 to measure development in terms of people, not just income.
