The Human Development Index is deliberately constructed from three separate dimensions, so that no single dimension (especially income) can dominate the assessment of a country's development:

1. A long and healthy life: measured using life expectancy at birth — the average number of years a newborn in that country is expected to live, given current mortality patterns. This captures the health outcomes of a population.

2. Knowledge: measured using a combination of expected years of schooling (for a child starting school today) and mean years of schooling (the average years of education actually completed by adults 25 and older). This captures the educational achievement of a population.

3. A decent standard of living: measured using Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, adjusted for purchasing power parity (PPP) so that incomes are comparable across countries with different price levels and currencies. This captures the material standard of living. …
