Ammeter measures current and is inserted in series with (ideally) zero resistance; voltmeter measures potential difference and is connected in parallel with (ideally) infinite resistance.

Ammeter

  • Measures the current flowing through a circuit element.
  • Connected in series in the circuit, so the same current passes through it.
  • Made by connecting a low resistance shunt in parallel with a galvanometer, so that most of the current bypasses the galvanometer coil.
  • Ideal ammeter resistance = 0, so it does not change the current it measures.

Voltmeter

  • Measures the potential difference across a circuit element.
  • Connected in parallel with the element. …
