A galvanometer is converted into an ammeter by shunting it with a low resistance in parallel, which diverts most of the current away from the galvanometer coil.

A moving-coil galvanometer (MCG) can only safely carry a very small current IgI_g (its full-scale deflection current) through its coil of resistance GG. To let it measure a much larger current II, we connect a small resistance SS (the shunt) in parallel with the galvanometer coil.

Since SS and GG are in parallel, most of the current takes the low-resistance path through SS, and only a small, fixed fraction IgI_g flows through the coil. By Kirchhoff's current law, the current through the shunt is I−IgI - I_g, and since the p.d. across both parallel branches is equal:

IgG=(I−Ig)S⇒S=IgGI−IgI_g G = (I - I_g)S \quad\Rightarrow\quad S = \frac{I_g G}{I - I_g}
