NAND (NOT-AND) and NOR (NOT-OR) are universal logic gates formed by following an AND or OR gate with a NOT gate; NAND's output is 0 only when both inputs are 1, and NOR's output is 1 only when both inputs are 0.

NAND gate: A NAND gate is an AND gate followed by a NOT gate (inverter). For inputs A and B, its output is

Y=A⋅B‾Y = \overline{A\cdot B}

Truth table:

A=0, B=0 → Y=1

A=0, B=1 → Y=1

A=1, B=0 → Y=1

A=1, B=1 → Y=0

So the output is LOW (0) only when both inputs are HIGH (1); otherwise it is HIGH (1).

NOR gate: A NOR gate is an OR gate followed by a NOT gate. For inputs A and B, its output is

Y=A+B‾Y = \overline{A+B}

Truth table:

A=0, B=0 → Y=1

A=0, B=1 → Y=0

A=1, B=0 → Y=0

A=1, B=1 → Y=0
