The eye's resolving power is set by diffraction at the pupil: the smallest resolvable angle is Δθ=1.22λ/D≈1\Delta\theta = 1.22\lambda/D \approx 1 arc-minute. You can measure it by finding the greatest distance at which two close marks still look separate.

Concept — resolving power of the eye (NCERT/CBSE wave-optics):

The eye is an optical instrument whose aperture is the pupil. Because of diffraction at this circular aperture, two nearby point objects can be seen as separate only if their angular separation exceeds a minimum value. By Rayleigh's criterion, the limit of resolution (smallest resolvable angle) for a circular aperture of diameter DD is:

Δθ=1.22 λD\Delta\theta = \frac{1.22\,\lambda}{D}

Estimating it theoretically:

For the eye, the pupil diameter D≈2D \approx 2–3 mm=2.5×10−3 m3\,\text{mm} = 2.5\times10^{-3}\,\text{m}, and for visible light λ≈5.5×10−7 m\lambda \approx 5.5\times10^{-7}\,\text{m}. Then:

Δθ=1.22×5.5×10−72.5×10−3≈2.7×10−4 rad≈1 arc-minute\Delta\theta = \frac{1.22\times5.5\times10^{-7}}{2.5\times10^{-3}} \approx 2.7\times10^{-4}\,\text{rad} \approx 1\ \text{arc-minute}

The resolving power is the reciprocal, 1/Δθ1/\Delta\theta.

Determining it experimentally:

  1. Draw two fine dots (or lines) separated by a small, measured distance dd on a white sheet.
  2. Walk backward, viewing them, until the two dots just merge into one — i.e. they can no longer be resolved. Measure this maximum distance LL.
  3. The minimum resolvable angle is then …
