Resolving power =2μsin⁡βλ=\dfrac{2\mu\sin\beta}{\lambda}; increase it by using a shorter wavelength λ\lambda or a larger numerical aperture μsin⁡β\mu\sin\beta (e.g. oil immersion).

Concept. The resolving power of a microscope is

R.P.=2μsin⁡βλ,R.P. = \frac{2\mu\sin\beta}{\lambda},

where λ\lambda is the wavelength of light used, μ\mu the refractive index of the medium between the object and objective, and β\beta the half-angle of the cone of light entering the objective. (μsin⁡β\mu\sin\beta is the numerical aperture.)
