Xylem carries water/minerals upward through dead tracheids and vessels; phloem carries food in both directions through living sieve tubes.

Both xylem and phloem are complex conducting tissues, but they differ:

Xylem:

  1. Function: conducts water and dissolved mineral salts from roots to the rest of the plant, and gives mechanical support.
  2. Direction of flow: mainly upward (unidirectional), root to shoot.
  3. Components: tracheids, vessels (trachea), xylem fibres and xylem parenchyma.
  4. Most conducting elements (tracheids, vessels) are dead at maturity, with thick lignified walls.

Phloem:

  1. Function: conducts prepared food (mainly sucrose) from the leaves (source) to storage/growing regions (sink).
  2. Direction of flow: bidirectional (up and down) depending on source and sink. …
