Xylem and phloem are complex tissues because each is composed of several different types of cells that jointly perform one function (conduction), unlike simple tissues that have only one cell type.

Simple vs complex tissue. A simple tissue is made of only one type of cell (e.g. parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma). A complex tissue is made of more than one type of cell, and these different cells work together as a single coordinated unit. The two conducting (vascular) tissues of plants - xylem and phloem - are the classic examples of complex tissues.

Xylem conducts water and dissolved minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant and also gives mechanical support. It is composed of four kinds of elements:

  1. Tracheids
  2. Vessels (tracheae)
  3. Xylem fibres
  4. Xylem parenchyma

Phloem conducts food (organic nutrients, mainly sucrose) from the leaves to storage organs and growing parts. It is composed of four kinds of elements:

  1. Sieve tube elements
  2. Companion cells
  3. Phloem fibres
  4. Phloem parenchyma …
