Auxins promote cell elongation, particularly at the shoot tip, and help maintain apical dominance (suppressing growth of lateral/axillary buds). They initiate rooting in stem cuttings, which is of great importance in the vegetative propagation of plants. Auxins promote parthenocarpy, e.g., the development of seedless fruits in tomato. They are also used to prevent premature fruit and leaf drop (abscission), and in higher concentrations act as a weedicide to kill dicotyledonous weeds (e.g., 2,4-D) without affecting monocot crops.
