A nephron consists of a Malpighian body (glomerulus + Bowman's capsule) followed by PCT, loop of Henle, DCT and collecting duct.

The nephron is the structural and functional unit of the kidney. A neat labelled diagram should show and name the following parts:

  1. Bowman's capsule — a double-walled cup enclosing the glomerulus (a tuft of capillaries); together they form the Malpighian body / renal corpuscle, where ultrafiltration occurs.
  2. Afferent arteriole bringing blood in and efferent arteriole taking blood out of the glomerulus.
  3. Proximal convoluted tubule (PCT) — coiled, for reabsorption.
  4. Loop of Henle — with a descending limb and an ascending limb, creating a concentration gradient.
  5. Distal convoluted tubule (DCT) — for further reabsorption and secretion. …
