ABA is a stress hormone because it helps the plant tolerate drought and other stresses (stomatal closure, dormancy, growth inhibition).

Abscisic acid (ABA) is a growth-inhibiting phytohormone. It is termed a 'stress hormone' because its level rises during unfavourable (stress) conditions and it triggers responses that help the plant survive:

  1. Under water shortage (drought), ABA causes closure of stomata, thereby reducing transpiration and conserving water.
  2. It induces and maintains dormancy of seeds and buds, so the plant remains inactive during unfavourable seasons (winter, drought).
