Attempt any two. Precise notes on glycolysis and the Calvin cycle are given below.

(a) Steps involved in glycolysis (EMP pathway)

Glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm and does not need oxygen.

  1. Glucose is phosphorylated to glucose-6-phosphate (using ATP) and isomerised to fructose-6-phosphate.
  2. A second phosphorylation gives fructose-1,6-bisphosphate (using ATP).
  3. This 6-carbon sugar splits into two 3-carbon molecules (PGAL/DHAP).
  4. Each triose is oxidised (forming NADH) and, through a series of steps, forms 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate → 3-PGA → PEP.
  5. Substrate-level phosphorylation finally yields pyruvate. Net gain per glucose: 2 pyruvate, 2 ATP and 2 NADH.

(d) Stages of the Calvin cycle

The Calvin cycle (C3 cycle) occurs in the stroma of chloroplasts and has three phases:

  1. Carboxylation — CO2 combines with RuBP (catalysed by RuBisCO) to form two molecules of 3-PGA.
  2. Reduction — 3-PGA is phosphorylated (ATP) and reduced (NADPH) to form glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P), from which sugar is made. …
