Johannes Kepler, from careful analysis of planetary observational data, formulated three empirical laws describing planetary motion:
1. Law of Orbits: Every planet moves around the Sun in an elliptical orbit, with the Sun situated at one of the two foci of the ellipse.
2. Law of Areas: The line joining the planet to the Sun (the radius vector) sweeps out equal areas in equal intervals of time. This means the areal velocity, , is constant — a direct consequence of the conservation of angular momentum, since gravity is a central force. It also implies the planet moves faster when nearer the Sun (perihelion) and slower when farther (aphelion).
