Kepler's three laws: elliptical orbits (Sun at a focus); equal areas in equal times; T2∝a3T^{2}\propto a^{3}.

First law (Law of orbits): Every planet moves in an elliptical orbit with the Sun situated at one of the two foci of the ellipse.

Second law (Law of areas): The line joining a planet to the Sun (the radius vector) sweeps out equal areas in equal intervals of time. This means the areal velocity dAdt\dfrac{dA}{dt} is constant, so a planet moves faster when nearer the Sun.
