Johannes Kepler formulated three empirical laws describing the motion of planets around the Sun:
First Law (Law of Orbits):
Every planet revolves around the Sun in an elliptical orbit, with the Sun situated at one of the two foci of the ellipse.
Second Law (Law of Areas):
The line (radius vector) joining a planet to the Sun sweeps out equal areas in equal intervals of time. That is, the areal velocity of the planet is constant. As a consequence, a planet moves faster when it is nearer the Sun (perihelion) and slower when it is farther (aphelion). This law is a consequence of the conservation of angular momentum.
