Degrees of freedom count the independent, quadratic energy terms (motions) a molecule can have — translational, rotational, and vibrational.

The number of degrees of freedom (ff) of a dynamical system is the total number of independent coordinates required to specify the position and configuration of the system completely, or equivalently, the number of independent ways in which the system can possess energy.

For gas molecules:

  • A monatomic molecule (e.g. He, Ar) has only translational motion along 3 mutually perpendicular directions → f=3f = 3.
  • A diatomic molecule (e.g. O₂, N₂) has 3 translational + 2 rotational (about the two axes perpendicular to the bond) degrees of freedom → f=5f = 5 (at ordinary temperatures, vibrational modes are usually not excited).
  • A polyatomic non-linear molecule has 3 translational + 3 rotational, plus vibrational modes. …
