Mean free path is the average distance a gas molecule travels freely before colliding with another molecule.

In a gas, molecules are in continuous random motion and constantly collide with one another. Between any two successive collisions, a molecule travels in a straight line for some distance. Since this distance varies randomly from one free flight to the next, we define the mean free path (λ\lambda) as the average distance travelled by a molecule between two successive collisions:

λ=12 πd2n\lambda = \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{2}\,\pi d^2 n}
