Newton's third law makes the internal forces equal and opposite, so the total momentum of an isolated system is unchanged: p⃗initial=p⃗final\vec p_{initial} = \vec p_{final}.

Statement: When no external force acts on a system, the total linear momentum of the system remains constant.

Proof: Consider two bodies of masses m1m_1 and m2m_2 moving with velocities u1u_1 and u2u_2 that collide and then move with velocities v1v_1 and v2v_2. During the collision (duration tt), body 2 exerts force F⃗12\vec F_{12} on body 1 and body 1 exerts F⃗21\vec F_{21} on body 2. By Newton's third law,

F⃗12=−F⃗21.\vec F_{12} = -\vec F_{21}.

The impulse on each equals its change in momentum:

F⃗12 t=m1v1−m1u1,F⃗21 t=m2v2−m2u2.\vec F_{12}\,t = m_1v_1 - m_1u_1, \qquad \vec F_{21}\,t = m_2v_2 - m_2u_2. …
