Poisson's ratio is the ratio of lateral (transverse) strain to longitudinal strain in a stretched material, within its elastic limit.

When a wire or rod of length LL and diameter DD is stretched by a longitudinal (tensile) force, it not only elongates along its length but also becomes slightly thinner (its diameter decreases). These two effects are called longitudinal strain and lateral (or transverse) strain respectively:

Longitudinal strain=ΔLL,Lateral strain=ΔDD\text{Longitudinal strain} = \frac{\Delta L}{L}, \qquad \text{Lateral strain} = \frac{\Delta D}{D}

Poisson's ratio σ\sigma is defined, within the elastic limit, as:

σ=−Lateral strainLongitudinal strain=−ΔD/DΔL/L\sigma = -\frac{\text{Lateral strain}}{\text{Longitudinal strain}} = -\frac{\Delta D/D}{\Delta L/L}

The negative sign is included because lateral strain and longitudinal strain are of opposite sign (stretching lengthens but thins the material), so σ\sigma itself comes out positive for ordinary materials.
