Poisson's ratio is the ratio of lateral strain to longitudinal strain (with a negative sign, since one is a contraction while the other is an elongation).

When a deforming force is applied along the length of a wire/rod, it produces:

  • A longitudinal strain = (Delta L)/L, the fractional change in length along the direction of the applied force.
  • A lateral strain = (Delta d)/d, the fractional change in the diameter (or radius) perpendicular to the applied force.

As a wire is stretched (elongates), its diameter simultaneously decreases (a contraction). Poisson's ratio sigma is defined as

sigma = -(lateral strain) / (longitudinal strain) = -[(Delta d)/d] / [(Delta L)/L]
