Poisson's ratio is the ratio of lateral to longitudinal strain, and is unitless since strain has no units.

When a wire or rod is stretched along its length, it also contracts slightly in the perpendicular (lateral) direction. Poisson's ratio is defined as the ratio of this lateral strain to the longitudinal strain that produced it:
