When the frequency of an external periodic force exactly matches a system's own natural frequency, energy is transferred most efficiently and the amplitude of oscillation grows to a maximum — this is resonance.

Every oscillating system (a pendulum, a stretched string, an air column, an LC circuit) has a natural frequency ν0\nu_0 at which it oscillates freely once disturbed. If instead the system is subjected to a periodic external force of frequency ν\nu (forced/driven oscillation), the amplitude of the resulting steady-state oscillation depends on how close ν\nu is to ν0\nu_0.

As ν→ν0\nu \to\nu_0, the driving force does work on the system in phase with its motion on every cycle, continually adding energy with none lost to opposing the system's own restoring tendency. This causes the amplitude to rise sharply, reaching a maximum exactly at ν=ν0\nu =\nu_0 — this condition is called resonance.
