Every oscillating system (a pendulum, a spring-mass system, a swing, a stretched string) has its own natural frequency f0, the frequency at which it oscillates if displaced and left alone (a free oscillation).
If an external periodic force of frequency f is applied to the system (a forced oscillation), the amplitude of the resulting steady-state oscillation depends strongly on how close f is to f0. As f approaches f0, the amplitude increases sharply, reaching a maximum exactly when f = f0 -- this condition is called resonance.
