Bt = Bacillus thuringiensis; its Cry-toxin genes are genetically engineered into crops for built-in insect resistance.

Bacillus thuringiensis is a Gram-positive soil bacterium that, during sporulation, forms proteinaceous crystals containing insecticidal Cry (crystal) proteins. Different strains produce different Cry proteins, each toxic to a specific group of insects — e.g. cry1Ac and cry2Ab against cotton bollworm, cry1Ab against corn borer.

The toxin is synthesised as an inactive protoxin and is activated only in the alkaline gut of the target insect, where the activated toxin binds to the midgut epithelium, forms pores, causes cell lysis, and kills the larva. This gut-pH specificity makes Bt toxin harmless to humans, animals, and non-target insects.
