Cry proteins give crops insect resistance, transgenesis is the process of creating genetically modified organisms, and bioreactors are vessels used to mass-produce biotechnological products.

  1. Cry protein: Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), a soil bacterium, produces crystal (Cry) proteins encoded by cry genes. These proteins are toxic to specific insect larvae — when ingested by a susceptible insect, the Cry protein binds to specific receptors in the insect's gut, causing the gut cells to swell and lyse (burst), killing the insect. Because different cry genes are specific to different insect orders (e.g. cryIAc, cryIIAb control cotton bollworms), these genes have been introduced into crop plants (e.g. Bt cotton, Bt brinjal) to make them naturally pest-resistant.
  2. Transgenesis: This is the process of introducing and stably incorporating a foreign gene (a "transgene") into the genome of an organism, so that the organism (and its offspring) expresses a new, desired characteristic that it did not originally have. The resulting organism is called a transgenic organism. Transgenesis is used to study gene function, produce disease models, and manufacture useful biological products (e.g. transgenic bacteria producing human insulin, transgenic cows producing enriched milk). …
