Modern biotechnology is built on two principles: genetic engineering (recombinant DNA technology) and maintaining sterile conditions for large-scale bioprocessing.

Principles of biotechnology (main question):

  1. Genetic engineering (recombinant DNA technology): techniques to change the chemistry of genetic material (DNA and RNA) and to introduce these altered genes into host organisms so as to change their phenotype. It uses tools such as restriction enzymes, vectors (plasmids), DNA ligase and a competent host.
  2. Maintenance of a sterile (contamination-free) environment / chemical engineering processes: to enable the growth of only the desired microbe or eukaryotic cell, in large quantities, for the manufacture of products such as antibiotics, vaccines, enzymes, etc., using bioreactors.

OR — Genetically Modified (GM) crop and its advantages:

A GM crop is a plant whose genome has been deliberately modified by introducing one or more foreign genes using genetic-engineering techniques.

Advantages:

  • Pest resistance (e.g. Bt crops resist insect pests, reducing pesticide use). …
