Biopiracy = unauthorized exploitation of bio-resources; Bt cotton = transgenic pest-resistant cotton; gene gun = particle-bombardment gene transfer; PCR = in-vitro DNA amplification.

  1. Biopiracy: The unauthorized exploitation of biological resources and associated traditional knowledge of a nation or indigenous community by individuals/organizations (often multinationals) without proper authorization or fair benefit-sharing/compensation. Examples cited by NCERT include patents on Basmati rice and turmeric. It is the reason nations enact laws to prevent such exploitation.
  2. Bt cotton: A transgenic (GM) cotton plant into which the cry gene(s) from the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis have been inserted. The gene produces a protein (Bt toxin) that exists as an inactive protoxin in the crystal; when eaten by an insect, the alkaline gut pH activates it, and it binds to the midgut lining and creates pores, killing the insect (e.g. cotton bollworm). This gives built-in pest resistance and reduces pesticide use.
  3. Gene gun (biolistics / particle bombardment): A direct method of gene transfer in which cells (especially plant cells) are bombarded with high-velocity micro-particles of gold or tungsten coated with the desired DNA, so the DNA enters the cell and can integrate into its genome. …
