Xerophytes survive water scarcity through morphological, anatomical, and physiological adaptations that reduce transpiration and improve water uptake/storage.

Xerophytes are plants adapted to grow in dry, water-deficient habitats such as deserts. Their adaptations include:

  1. Reduced leaf surface — leaves are often reduced to spines or scales (e.g. cactus) to minimise the transpiring surface area.
  2. Thick cuticle and sunken stomata — a thick waxy cuticle on leaves/stems and stomata sunk in pits (often covered by hair) reduce water loss by evaporation.
  3. Extensive root system — roots are either very deep (to tap groundwater) or widely spread near the surface (to quickly absorb occasional rainfall).
  4. Succulence — stems or leaves store water in specialised parenchymatous tissue (e.g. cactus stem), which also often takes over photosynthesis when leaves are reduced.
  5. CAM (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism) photosynthesis — stomata open only at night to take in CO₂ (minimising daytime water loss) and close during the hot day. …
