Hydrophytes are adapted to live partly or wholly submerged in water; their key adaptations aid buoyancy, gas exchange and reduced structural investment.

Hydrophytes (e.g. Hydrilla, Vallisneria, water lily, water hyacinth) show:

  1. Root system: poorly developed, or absent in fully submerged forms (e.g. Ceratophyllum, Utricularia), since water and minerals are absorbed directly by the whole plant body.
  2. Aerenchyma: large, well-developed air spaces run through stem, petiole and leaves, giving buoyancy and facilitating internal gas diffusion.
  3. Reduced mechanical/vascular tissue: since water itself supports the plant, xylem and sclerenchyma are poorly developed.
  4. Leaf/stomata modifications: floating leaves have stomata only on the upper epidermis, in large numbers; fully submerged leaves lack stomata altogether and exchange gases directly through a thin epidermis, and are often thin/ribbon-like or finely dissected to reduce water-current resistance and increase absorptive surface area. …
