Dehydration of an alcohol follows an E1 path (protonation → carbocation → loss of β-H → alkene); (CH₃)₃CBr undergoes SN1.

(a) Mechanism — dehydration of an alcohol (E1). Using ethanol with concentrated H₂SO₄ at ~443 K:

  1. Protonation: the –OH accepts H⁺ from the acid to give a protonated alcohol (oxonium ion), –OH₂⁺, converting –OH into a good leaving group (water).
  2. Formation of carbocation: water leaves, giving a carbocation (rate-determining step): CH₃CH₂⁺ for ethanol.
  3. Elimination of a proton: a β-hydrogen is lost to a base, forming the C=C double bond → ethene, and the H⁺ is regenerated (acid is a catalyst). [Alternatively, acylation of an amine: RNH₂ + R′COCl → R′CONHR + HCl — nucleophilic addition–elimination at the acyl carbon.] …
