SOCl₂ is preferred because SO₂ and HCl escape as gases, giving a pure product; the OR part: dehydration rate is 1° < 2° < 3°.

Main. Carboxylic acids can be converted to acid chlorides using PCl₃, PCl₅ or SOCl₂. Thionyl chloride (SOCl₂) is preferred because the reaction gives, besides the acid chloride, only two gaseous by-products — sulphur dioxide (SO₂) and hydrogen chloride (HCl):

RCOOH + SOCl₂ → RCOCl + SO₂↑ + HCl↑.

Since both by-products are gases and leave the reaction mixture, the acid chloride is obtained in a pure state (PCl₅ leaves POCl₃ behind, which contaminates the product).
