(a) Preparation of acetic acid from methyl magnesium bromide:
Methylmagnesium bromide reacts with carbon dioxide (usually passed over crushed dry ice) to form the magnesium salt of the acid, which on hydrolysis with dilute acid gives acetic acid:
CH3MgBr + CO2 -> CH3-C(=O)-O-MgBr --(H3O+ / dilute HCl)--> CH3COOH (acetic acid) + Mg(OH)Br
(i) Reaction with Na2CO3: being an acid stronger than carbonic acid, acetic acid decomposes sodium carbonate with brisk effervescence of CO2 gas - this is in fact a standard chemical test for the -COOH group:
2 CH3COOH + Na2CO3 -> 2 CH3COONa + H2O + CO2 (gas evolved)
