Primary batteries are non-rechargeable (irreversible reaction); secondary batteries are rechargeable (reversible reaction) and can store and re-supply charge repeatedly.

Primary battery. The electrode reaction occurs only once and is not reversible; once the reactants are used up the cell becomes dead and cannot be recharged. Examples: dry (Leclanché) cell and mercury cell.

Secondary battery. The reaction is reversible, so the cell can be recharged by passing an external current, which drives the reaction backwards and regenerates the original reactants. Examples: lead storage battery (used in cars) and the nickel–cadmium cell.
