Na₂Cr₂O₇ + 2KCl → K₂Cr₂O₇ + 2NaCl; K₂Cr₂O₇ is a strong oxidising agent in acidic medium (Cr₂O₇²⁻/Cr³⁺, E° = +1.33 V).

Preparation of K₂Cr₂O₇ from Na₂Cr₂O₇. A hot concentrated solution of sodium dichromate is treated with potassium chloride:

Na₂Cr₂O₇ + 2KCl → K₂Cr₂O₇ + 2NaCl.

Potassium dichromate is much less soluble than sodium chloride, so on cooling the solution, orange crystals of K₂Cr₂O₇ separate out and are filtered off.

Oxidising property. In acidic solution potassium dichromate is a powerful oxidising agent, being reduced from Cr(+6) to Cr(+3): …
