Roast chromite with Na2CO3/air -> sodium chromate; acidify -> sodium dichromate; add KCl -> potassium dichromate crystals.

Starting material: chromite ore, FeCr2O4 (FeO.Cr2O3).

Step 1 - Fusion (oxidation) with molten alkali in air:

4FeCr2O4 + 8Na2CO3 + 7O2 -> 8Na2CrO4 + 2Fe2O3 + 8CO2.

The yellow sodium chromate solution is separated from insoluble Fe2O3.

Step 2 - Acidification:

2Na2CrO4 + H2SO4 -> Na2Cr2O7 + Na2SO4 + H2O.

(orange sodium dichromate forms; chromate <-> dichromate is pH-dependent.)

Step 3 - Conversion to K2Cr2O7: …
