Self-inductance L = ϕ/I and mutual inductance M = ϕ₂/I₁, both measured in henry. OR: an AC generator converts mechanical energy to electrical energy by electromagnetic induction.

Main — definitions and units.

  • Self-induction: When current I in a coil changes, the flux ϕ it links with itself changes and induces an emf in the same coil. The coefficient of self-induction is L = ϕ/I, or from ε = −L(dI/dt), L is the emf induced per unit rate of change of current. SI unit: henry (H) = V·s/A.
  • Mutual induction: When current I₁ in one coil changes, it induces an emf in a neighbouring coil by the change of flux ϕ₂ linked with it. The coefficient of mutual induction is M = ϕ₂/I₁, or ε₂ = −M(dI₁/dt). SI unit: henry (H).

OR — AC generator. It works on electromagnetic induction: when a coil is rotated in a uniform magnetic field, the flux through it changes continuously, inducing an alternating emf. A rectangular coil (armature) rotates with angular speed ω in field B; the flux is ϕ = NBA cosωt, so the induced emf is …
