An AM radio crackles during a lightning strike because the lightning discharge itself radiates a broad spectrum of electromagnetic waves that interfere with the radio signal.

A lightning stroke is a sudden, large, rapidly varying electric current in the atmosphere. Since an accelerating/decelerating charge radiates electromagnetic waves, the lightning discharge behaves like an enormous, uncontrolled transmitting antenna, radiating electromagnetic waves spread over a very wide range of frequencies — including the medium-frequency band used by AM radio.
