Maxwell's most important prediction was the existence of self-sustaining electromagnetic waves, later confirmed experimentally by Hertz.

Maxwell combined the laws of electricity and magnetism (Gauss's law, Gauss's law for magnetism, Faraday's law, and the Ampere-Maxwell law, which he completed by adding the displacement current term) into one consistent set of four equations. These equations show that a time-varying electric field generates a magnetic field, and a time-varying magnetic field generates an electric field. Because each field regenerates the other, the two can propagate together through empty space as a transverse wave — an electromagnetic wave — travelling at the speed of light, c = 1/√(μ₀ε₀).
